DD 234

A muscarinic antagonist used to study binding characteristics of muscarinic cholinergic receptors.

RELATED TERMS
--------------------------------------

Antagonist
"In biochemistry, an antagonist acts against and blocks an action. For example, insulin lowers the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood, whereas another hormone called glucagon raises it; therefore, insulin and glucagon are antagonists. An antagonist is the opposite of an agonist which stimulates an action. Antagonists and agonists are key players in pharmacology and in the chemistry of the human body."

Cholinergic
Relating to nerve cells or fibers that employ acetylcholine as their neurotransmitter.

Receptors
Areas on the outer part of a cell that allow the cell to join or bind with insulin that is in the blood.

An organochlorine insecticide that is slightly irritating to the skin. (From Merck Index, 11th ed, p482)

DDBJ
DATABASES containing information about NUCLEIC ACIDS such as BASE SEQUENCE; SNPS (POLYMORPHISM, SINGLE NUCLEOTIDE); NUCLEIC ACID CONFORMATION; and other properties. Information about the DNA fragments kept in a GENE LIBRARY or GENOMIC LIBRARY is often maintained in DNA databases.

DD234
A muscarinic antagonist used to study binding characteristics of muscarinic cholinergic receptors.

DDAVP
A synthetic analog of the pituitary hormone, ARGIPRESSIN. Its action is mediated by the vasopressin receptor V2. It has prolonged antidiuretic activity, but little pressor effects. It also modulates levels of circulating FACTOR VIII and VON WILLEBRAND FACTOR.

DD-234
A muscarinic antagonist used to study binding characteristics of muscarinic cholinergic receptors.

DCMU
A pre-emergent herbicide.

DCMP Deaminase
An enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolytic deamination of deoxycytidylic acid to deoxyuridylic acid and ammonia. It plays an important role in the regulation of the pool of deoxynucleotides in higher organisms. The enzyme also acts on some 5-substituted deoxycytidylic acids. EC 3.5.4.12.

De Quervain Thyroiditis
Spontaneously remitting inflammatory condition of the thyroid gland characterized by fever, weakness, sore throat, and painful enlargement of the thyroid gland.

De Quervain Disease
Inflammation of a tendon sheath. Causes include trauma, tendon stress, bacterial disease (gonorrhea, tuberculosis), rheumatic disease, and gout. Common sites are the shoulder capsule, hip capsule, hamstring muscles, and Achilles tendon. The tendon sheaths become inflamed and painful, and accumulate fluid. Joint mobility is usually reduced. Friction rubs may be felt or heard (with a stethoscope) on movement. Calcium deposits may occur in the tendon and its sheath, leading to opacities on radiographs of the affected area. (Saunders Dictionary & Encyclopedia of Laboratory Medicine and Technology, 1984)

De Pointes, Torsades
A ventricular tachycardia characterized by periodic twisting of the points of the QRS complexes and rates between 200 and 250 beats per minute. It may be self-limited or may progress to ventricular fibrillation.
