The joint or part of the arm between the hand and the forearm.


Carpal bone
One of the wrist bones. There are eight carpal bones that are arranged in two rows.

Carpal tunnel
The space in the wrist where tendons and nerves to the hand are found.

Carpal tunnel release
A surgical procedure to relieve pressure exerted on the median nerve within the carpal tunnel (the carpal tunnel syndrome). The median nerve is pinched in the wrist as it passes through the carpal tunnel. The buildup of scar tissue inside the carpal tunnel leads to this problem. Treatment options include splinting, anti-inflammatory agents, and surgery. The surgical release is performed via a small incision using conventional surgery or a fiberoptic scope (endoscopic carpal tunnel repair).

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Swelling of the tendons which pass through the wrist and compress the median nerve. Symptoms include pain, numbness and tingling in the hands, primarily the first three fingers and thumb. Symptoms may also appear in the wrist and forearm. CTS symptoms may even wake a person at night.

Carpal tunnel syndrome
Pain, numbness and tingling of the fingers caused by compression of the median nerve at the wrist.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTD)
A specific CTD occurring as the result of compression on the median nerve, which travels through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. Symptoms can include tingling and numbness in the hand, and loss of dexterity and strength in the hand.

A hard, painful, pus-filled infection of the skin. Carbuncles are larger than boils and frequently have more than one opening.

A cancer-causing substance.

Enlargement of the heart.

The fat-soluble pigment in carrots, tomatoes and other vegetables, egg yolks, milk fat and other substances that can be converted in the body to vitamin A.

The main artery in the neck.


Carpal tunnel syndrome
Pain, numbness and tingling of the fingers caused by compression of the median nerve at the wrist.

Cat-scratch fever
A bacterial infection acquired through the scratch of a cat or other animal.

Cauliflower ear
A trauma-induced deformity of the ear caused by repeated cartilage and soft-tissue injury.

A chemical that can cause burns.

To purposely burn with a hot instrument or caustic substance to destroy tissue, such as a wart.
